Your Desires

I read this over at Challies and wanted to comment. I often forget that we are being "watched" as Dr. Moore points out.  Sometimes I think that I forget that I am in a battle. Yes, the battle has been won, yes, God is sovereign in all things, yes, I find my joy in Christ and I want to live to magnify Him and enjoy Him...and no, none of those truths change the truth of : we are in a spiritual battle. Here is what Challies said:  I have been reading Russell Moore’s new book  Tempted and Tried: Temptation and the Triumph of Christ  and came across a quote—a question—that had the rough spiritual effect of cracking me over the head with a 2 x 4. As you no doubt gleaned from the title, this is a book about temptation, the forms it may take in our life, and Christ’s triumph over it. In the second chapter Moore writes about demonic powers and says that as far as temptation goes, you are being watched—you are  always  being watched. The spiritual powers out there have long experience

Flipping The Switch: Why Moralism Is Not The Gospel

The moralist impulse in the church reduces the Bible to a codebook for human behavior and substitutes moral instruction for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Far too many evangelical pulpits are given over to moralistic messages rather than the preaching of the Gospel. Angela, We mourn your loss with you and we hold you and your family in prayer. Grandmothers are a blessing from the Lord and you were blessed with so many years. I know you will miss her and will grieve the loss of that relationship. For her, well, she will be waiting for you in complete and utter joy :) We love you sister! What Would Jesus Do? BY R W Glenn

The fad may be over, but that doesn’t mean the spirit of WWJD isn’t still alive and kicking. It is. And although it may sound pretty harmless, even helpful, I would suggest that the WWJD mentality is more sinister than it may at first appear. Here are seven reasons: 1. It can turn Christianity into moralism. Now you might think, “Wait a second! God himself tells us to imitate Jesus in passages like 1 John 2:6. How, then, can asking, ‘What would Jesus do?’ turn Christianity into moralism?” Answer: because the question doesn’t assume our undeserved acceptance through the gospel. In other words, if it is not clear to me that my call to ask “What would Jesus do?” is only Christian in light of what Jesus has already done, then my default mode will be to see the imitation of Christ as the means to God’s acceptance rather than a response to the truth that I am already accepted solely on the basis of what Jesus has already done for me on the cross. 2. It can feed our self-righteousness
